Home Schooling – Opportunities and Challenges

Children usually ‘Walk’ to school and ‘Run’ when they return home. This is a universal phenomena and is tested and proven over time – from our grand parents to possibly our grand children – we see that during our initial days (formative years) we do not enjoy schooling like the way we enjoy during our school ending years (adolescence years). Home schooling provides great opportunity to children with learning disabilities and other ‘hesitant’ children
The merits of home schooling are many – the primary being that you are not compared even inadvertently with anyone around you – thereby saving a huge embarrassment and guilt. A child can learn at a pace that can be decided mutually between the child and the guide. A child can study what is appealing on that day. In a classroom, a child can’t expect or get individual attention and therefore the time it takes to complete a lesson is much higher when compared to a one on one session. In addition to all these advantages, a child need not go for ‘tutions’ which is an inevitable evil in Indian education system. Tutions are no different from Home schooling.
When we talk of tutions, I used to wonder about this concept. Typically, the tution teachers are the same individuals who teach in classrooms. Even the students are same. Even today, I fail to understand that if a child has to attend tutions after the school hours, then what is the purspose of going to school andattending to classes. No magic is taught in private tutions. Then why is’tutions’ so important in today’s education system? If tutions are inevitable, then is schooling necessary? Is schooling needed only to the extent that any educational board demands an association with a school?
These thoughts are not new. These thoughts have been haunting educationists and socialists for a long time. So, new methods of home schooling have started getting recognised. The first of its kind is the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). A child need not attend classes at school – can continue to make arrangements to learn from home – and can appear in the board examinations. A wonderful opportunity for children who can’t afford to spend their time and money in traditional school system. This type of education is economically affordable for the masses and for children closer to poverty line. The population in NIOS has kept a steady increase in these years and it isglad to see many children have fulfilled their dreams of completing their school education from home. We all know that at the university level, we have distance education program (Correspondence courses) where students can afford to join these courses without attending to colleges – and instead of wasting their time, such children employ themselves and earn their fees for such courses.
So?? am I driving to a point where we concludetraditional schooling is bad? Am I saying that schooling is a waste of time and energy? No- certainly not. No system can replace a traditional schooling model where a child learns to be a social being. A child undertstands the importance of good over bad, magnanimity, role modeling, leading, sports, games, competition and many more. But these should not stop education to a child who can’t afford to come to school – may be because of financial burden or due to any other reasons.
Home schooling is certainly a very good alternative to traditional schooling and paves way for many students to pursue graduation at affordable fees and time lines. We should be thankful to open schooling or home schooling systems without which we would have lost so many young minds in their formative years. Home schooling is therefore a wonderful opportunity and wherever possible, I would request the responsible people of the society to support and patronize home schooling.
Thanks and regards,

Online Education Schools – Teaching Degree Opportunities

The education of individuals in society is the primary form and most effective way of providing a solid future to upcoming generations. Without this instruction the next generation of people would not have the proper knowledge to function in all the areas of our society. Online study provides education degrees that facilitate the learning process to transform students into educators.
Traditionally, education is viewed as teaching individuals from kindergarten through college. Education does fall heavily in this category, but individuals can become educators in many areas outside of the typical classroom. With the industry being so diverse students have multiple options. These options include K-12 education, special education, early childhood education, and adult education. Specializing in these areas can have students earning degrees from an associate’s to a doctorate. Students should strongly consider what and who they want to teach before enrolling in a program. This choice will make deciding on what online college to attend and what degree level to pursue significantly easier. Beginning an education unprepared can be overwhelming, frustrating and may hurt a student financially if they enter a program too hastily. A student may need to switch to a different concentration after a year or two if they decide another path would be better for them, thus wasting years of valuable time and money. Taking the time to properly prepare for your career will save you both. Think carefully about the options available because there is something for everyone interested in the field.
One of the most popular degree opportunities in education is K-12. Professionals who have this degree teach kindergarten through twelfth grade. In general, colleges break down K-12 education into four categories, which include early childhood, elementary school, junior high, and high school. Individual degrees will match the subject and grade level a student decides to major in. For example, if a student enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program wants to teach English to high school students they would get their degree in English education. Main courses would focus on English with supporting courses preparing students to teach. To teach K-12 in any state students must have a bachelor’s degree in their concentrated area.
Earning a degree in adult education prepares students to teach or train adults. This can take place in vocational schools, colleges, and universities. Students can earn this type of degree in the setting and field of their choice. Most adult educators in the profession hold a master’s degree or higher. Study includes development of curriculum, communication, and the theory of adult education. Students will learn about administration, how to plan a program, and how to teach adults in a social context. It is common for individuals who have an undergraduate degree in a certain area and work experience to pursue a master’s in adult education. For example, a person that has an online degree in business can earn a master’s in adult education in business. The blend of education and experience will allow this individual to obtain a teaching position within a college or university. Other career opportunities include education administration and corporate training specialists.
The profession of education goes past the common view of teaching K-12 and college. Search out the vast online opportunities available to students and find accredited online education degree programs that will allow you to get the most enjoyment out of your earned degree.

Notable Colleges & Universities in Reading

Reading plays host to a number of renowned educational institutions that have made their mark on the landscape of UK learning. Here are some of the best of them.
University of Reading
The University of Reading is considered to be one of the top 10 most research-intensive universities in the United Kingdom. It also ranks as one of the top 200 universities in the world. The university’s reputation for teaching, research and enterprise is world-class.
Built in 1892, the University of Reading received its Royal Charter in 1926 and established a long tradition of research, education and training on a local, national and international level.
The university is a two-time recipient of the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education, which it won in 1998 and 2005. At present, it boasts of a strong multi-cultural environment, with over 3,000 international students coming from 120 countries.
The university campus is located a mere two miles from Reading’s city centre and offers a full set of university courses. The grounds span around 1.6 square kilometres and encompass three distinct campuses — Whiteknights Campus, London Road Campus and Blumershe Campus.
Whiteknights Campus, the largest of the three, is named after the White Knight, John De Erleigh IV, a 13th century knight. It includes woodlands, meadows and Whiteknights Lake, as well as the main University Library, which contains around a million books. The London Road Campus is the original university site and still hosts annual graduation ceremonies. Meanwhile, the Bulmershe Court Campus, located in Woodley, houses the Institute of Education and the School of Health and Social Care as well as the university’s largest hall of residence.
In addition, the university owns some farmlands in Arborfield, Sonning and Shinfield villages where various research centres, including the flagship Centre for Dairy Research can be found. The university is also associated with Gyosei International College, a bi-cultural British/Japanese learning institution that accounts for Reading’s substantial Japanese student population.
Thames Valley University
Reading also boasts of one of England’s largest universities, Thames Valley University, which has a student population of around 45,000, including over 20,000 full-time students.
Located at the Thames Valley, the university was formerly known as the Reading College and School of Arts and Design. The Reading campus is one of three Thames Valley campuses, the other two being in London and Slough. Courses offered include health care, health sciences, media, music and a host of professional business disciplines.
Thames Valley University is the largest provider of skilled manpower for companies in West London and Thames Valley. It began as the Lady Byron School in 1860. Four different colleges were merged in 1990 and became known as Polytechnic of West London. It was renamed two years later as Thames Valley University.
With the merging of this unique set of institutions, Thames Valley University has developed an unconventional appeal, mostly to students from West London and Thames Valley. Many of them choose to commute from home to attend this university. The professional training courses it offers are also unique and cannot be found elsewhere. According to 2006 estimates, nearly half of the students are from non-white ethnic groups while 60% only go to school part time.
Overall, the university has four faculties. These are the Faculty of the Arts (formerly known as the London College of Music and Media), the Faculty of Professional Studies, the Faculty of Health and Human Sciences and the Faculty of Technology. The 14-19 Academy, which is one of the university’s departments, offers GCSE and A level courses. Then there is the Graduate School in Ealing which offers research degree courses and support for research undertakings. In addition, there is a Thames Valley University Students’ Union which provides representation for students.
Padworth College and Parkland Language School
Reading also hosts a number of commercial English language summer schools, the most notable of which are Padworth College and Parkland Language School.
Inaugurated in 1963, Padworth College began as a sixth form all-girls boarding school which became co-educational only in 2005. It now admits students aged between 13 and 19. The college is located between Burghfield Common and Tadley. It is based within the local manor house known as Padworth House, which was the home of the Darby-Griffith military family during the 18th century.
Meanwhile, the Parkland Language School teaches English language summer courses to students aged between 11 and 17. It is located amid several acres of striking parkland in one of the most renowned private boarding schools in England.
