There were 145 traffic deaths in Tennessee among drivers between the
ages of 16 and 20 in 2005 -- the most recent data from the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
An interactive web site,
www.drivingskillsforlife.com, enables young people to go online for
hands-on training to improve their skills behind the wheel while
offering an opportunity to win terrific prizes.
Vehicle crashes are the No. 1 killer of teenagers in America -- a total
of 5,699 between the ages of 16 and 20 in 2005 (NHTSA includes
20-year-olds in teen data). Established in 2003 by Ford Motor Company
Fund -- the philanthropic arm of Ford -- and the Governors Highway
Safety Associaton,
Driving Skills for Life helps young drivers improve their
skills in four areas that are factors in more than 60 percent of teen
vehicle crashes: Hazard Recognition, Vehicle Handling, Space Management
and Speed Management.
The web site is not just for teens, but also parents and educators.
Parents can access tips to help their young drivers, and educators can
do lesson plans for classroom instruction. All printed materials are
free and can be downloaded from the web site.
If your school would be interested in a feature on teen driving safety,
we could arrange an interview with a program leader, even when students
return later this year. Or perhaps your paper and/or web site could run
an item about the
Driving Skills for Life web site. If so, we would be
grateful if you could share a copy for our files.
Following is a news release on the web site. For further information,

TEEN SAFETY PROGRAM
DRIVING SKILLS FOR LIFE
INCLUDES EXCITING
INTERACTIVE WEB SITE
DEARBORN, Mich. –
Vehicle crashes are the No. 1 killer of teenagers in America. Nearly
6,000 teens die annually in such accidents, according to the National
Highway Traffic Administration. Studies demonstrate that crash rates
decline considerably as young drivers gain experience, and Ford Motor
Company’s Driving Skills for Life teen safety program helps young
drivers learn to improve their skills on the road.
To help spread the
message, Ford Motor Company’s Driving Skills for Life program
includes a Web site with innovative features designed to help young
drivers improve their skills behind the wheel while offering an
opportunity to win terrific prizes.
“We are very excited
about this Web site,” said Sue Cischke, Ford Vice President,
Environmental and Safety Engineering. “This program is primarily
Web-based, and we hope to reach teens, parents and educators in all 50
states with this important training that can save lives.”
The
site,
www.drivingskillsforlife.com,
has a registration feature that provides visitors with user names and
passwords. While on the site, teens can complete various e-learning
modules, pass a safe driving quiz, play safe driving games and complete
a variety of other on-line activities. Several features on the site
award points that teens may use to enter into prize drawings. Among the
prizes are a laptop computer, digital camera, gift certificates and Ford
die-cast vehicles.
The exciting Web site
is not just for teens; it also is for parents and educators. Parents
can access tips to help their teens. Educators can do their own lesson
plans for classroom instruction and upload the plan for other
instructors to download for their use in similar settings.
Established in 2003 by Ford Motor Company, the Governors Highway
Safety Association (GHSA) and a panel of safety experts, the Driving
Skills for Life program helps teens develop skills necessary for
safe driving beyond what they learn in standard driver education
programs. The new Web site also features elements of Ford’s Eco-Driving
program, which teaches drivers the importance of consuming less fuel and
helping to protect the environment.
Ford Motor Company, a
global automotive industry leader based in Dearborn, Mich., manufactures
