The following courses are currently offered by the GCHS Math Department:

Math Foundations I: Concepts emphasized in this course include addition, subtraction, multiplication, division of rational numbers, solving basic equations and inequalities involving rational numbers, basic graphing skills, and introduction to statistics. Also, students are instructed in the basic use of the TI-83 PLUS graphing calculator.

Math Foundations II:  Concepts emphasized in this course include functions, slopes as rates of change, solving and writing equations, graphing and analyzing linear equations and inequalities, and proportionality. This course is the first semester for Algebra I. Students are given further instruction in the use of the TI-83 PLUS graphing calculator. An end-of-course exam is required by the State of Tennessee and will count as 15% of the student's final average. (Prerequisite: Math Foundations I or passing score on the 8th grade diagnostic test given to incoming Freshmen.)

Algebra I:  Concepts emphasized in this course include solving systems of equations, introduction to polynomials, factoring, rational and radical expressions in equations, quadratic equations, exponential expressions, and the Pythagorean Theorem. A Gateway exam is required by the State of Tennessee and will count as 15% of the student's final average. A passing score is required for graduation. (Prerequisite: Math Foundations II)

Algebra II:  Concepts emphasized in this course include matrices, polynomials, radical expressions, quadratic functions, conic sections, polynomial functions, rational expressions, exponential and logarithmic functions, sequences and series, probability, and trigonometric concepts. (Prerequisite: Algebra I)

Geometry:  Concepts emphasized in this course include points, lines, planes, angles, reasoning and proofs, parallel and perpendicular lines, identifying and applying congruent triangles, quadrilaterals, proportion and similarity, applying right triangles and trigonometry, circles, polygons and area, surface area and volume, and coordinate geometry. (Prerequisite: Algebra I.)

Advanced Algebra / Trigonometry:  Concepts emphasized in this course include trigonometric functions, analytic trigonometry, trigonometric applications, systems of equations and inequalities, sequences, series, and probability. (Prerequisites: Algebra II and Geometry.)

Pre-Calculus:  Concepts emphasized in this course include advanced topics from Algebra, functions, polynomial and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, and topics from analytic geometry. (Prerequisites: Algebra II and Geometry.)

Calculus:  Concepts emphasized in this course include limits and their properties, differentiation, applications of differentiation, integration, and applications of integration. (Prerequisites: Advanced Algebra / Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus.)
